No Tobacco Day

Today, May 31 is No Tobacco Day which declared by the World Health Organization(WHO). This year’s topic is a ban on tobacco advertisement and promotion. Stop smoking can prevent diseases which cause death, such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

According to CBC news’s data, the top three areas where have the most smokers are Nunavut 59.7 per cent, N.W.T. 34.9 per cent and Yukon 29.3 per cent. BC is 15.8% which is the lowest smoking rate in Canada. From the data, North Canada’s numbers are significantly high. The other information from the news is 80 per cent smokers come from low or middle income families. I think the reason is the poor copying strategies. Some people smoking to release stress. Actually, it does not help and bad for the health.

As we all known, smoking harm out health. Studies showed that 21 per cent of deaths in men and 12.2 per cent of deaths in women because of smoking. The most three consequences relate to smoking are lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. If we can smoke less, the less chances we got disease. Second hand smoking is the other killer. Even though you do not smoke, you may expose to the smoking environment. It is bad for your health even worse than smoking directly.

It is very important to control tobacco use. There are some ways about tobacco control, such as ban all tobacco adverting, promotion and sponsorship or increasing tobacco prices. In my opinion, the best way to let people quit smoking is education. If people get more education about the negative of smoking, they may think about to quit smoking.

Nodding Disease

Today, I read an article about nodding disease because I was attracted by the article’s title. After reading this article, I felt so sad for the children who have this tropical disease. Nodding disease is a mentally and physically disabling disease that affects children, typically between the ages of 5 and 15. The most infected country is southern Sudan.

Nodding disease is characterized by episodes of repetitive nodding of the head, with progression to generalized tonicclonic seizures, mental deterioration and physical incapacity. During seizures the children lose consciousness and they may hurt themselves, for example fall into fire or drown in rivers. Unfortunately, there is no treatment yet. WHO suggested that some low-income countries need to improve their water sanitation, because some parasites live in the contaminated water. It is difficult to improve water quality because low income countries have no money.

I thought some points related to nodding disease. First, income and social status influence treating nodding disease. In low income countries, people are poor, so they cannot afford medication to treat symptoms. Also, children are malnutrition which causes they have difficulties recover from the disease. Second, health services influence diseases’ cure. Limited health services in low income countries and people are difficult to access health services, for example, people who live at rural area, the transportation issues and locations should be considered. Third, personal behaviour and coping skills are also influence disease progress. Nodding disease begins when children are fed the local diet of beans. Western food do not affect the disease.

In conclusion, local health workers should be trained in the identification of the syndrome and how to support patients psychologically and socially. The government should be focus on preventing deterioration of the cases and strengthening surveillance.

Adolescents with diabetes need psychologic supports

Few days ago, I posted a blog related to sugar intake. Nowadays, pop drinks become popular beverage among adolescents. The other problem arises which is more and more adolescents get diabetes. Adolescence is a unique age group because they are in a physical and psychological development phase and face the transition into adulthood. While most people focus on the effect of diabetes on adolescents’ physical transition, it is more and more recognized that psychological factors play important roles in disease
management for diabetic adolescents.

One of the most significant psychological changes of adolescents with diabetes is knowing that they have diabetes and have to live with it for their entire lives. Denial and anger are the first psychosocial stage when adolescents first know that they have diabetes. They may ask parents and doctors why they have diabetes. Some of the diabetic adolescents refuse to take medications and do not follow doctor’s instructions.Because of poor glycemic control, they may experience fatigue and may not want to go to school or attend daily activities. Young people with diabetes are at increased risk for information processing weaknesses and learning problems, especially with early diabetes onset. Gaining knowledge is an important task for adolescents. If they cannot control their glycemic level, they will be facing difficulties in studying. In addition, they may feel depressed and think they are different from others.

When diabetic adolescents finally accept the fact of having diabetes, some of them may experience depression, frustration, and fear. They fear the diabetic complications such as blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic lower limb amputations. Some of them think it is the end of the world and think they will die soon. Living in fear makes them depressed and anxious. These negative feelings also affect glycemic control. We can help them through this difficult period by consultation and give them emotional support.

H7N9 virus and drug resistance

In April, H7N9 flu attacked Shang hai in China, almost 30 people died from the disease. According to CBC news on May 28, new issue is coming which is new H7N9 bird flu virus easily develops drug resistance. Studies showed that H7N9 virus already resistant a class of flu medication. It is dangerous because if flu become worse in future, there will be no drug can prevent of treat the disease. More people will be infected by H7N9 without vaccine.

There are one of the reasons that people can develop drug resistance which is misuse drugs. For example, antibiotic drugs is one of the most severe misused drugs. Some people have acquired the habit of self-medication. However, because of their lack of knowledge, they often misuse antibiotics, such as failure to complete therapy, skipping of doses, and reusing expired antibiotics. Research showed that patients frequently discontinue taking antibiotic therapy when they begin to feel better or slight side effects, and one-quarter of the patients retain leftover antibiotics for future use. This situation is very common. Sometimes, I discontinued drug therapy when I felt better. In my opinion, I think that I recover from the disease, so I do not need to take the drug anymore. Actually, it is wrong. If next the symptoms occur, I have to repeat the drug therapy, but sometimes the same drugs did not work in the new cases. I need to find more strong doses or drugs to relieve my symptoms.

The best way to control the flu is not treat the disease but to prevent it. H7N9 transmits between people, so we should improve personal hygiene to prevent transmission. For example, wash you hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. From daily life, we can prevent flu by cutting off the infection cycle.

This young British soldier who was killed in a brutal day time only 25 years old. His wife and family members were very sad. No one believed terror attack had happened in British.

British government should increase security level because these terror attack's methods were easy to copy. Two men only used butcher's knives to kill the soldier in daytime . Moreover, the airplane terrorist threat the other example of life threaten issue. the British government should figure out some ways to prevent similar attacks happen again. One of  the methods may be build a better relationships with Muslim countries. I hope that no one will be hurt during this stress period. We have to save lives and do not hurt people.

Environment Week

From June 2 to 8 is Environment week in Canada, farmers are doing great jobs for protecting environment. One way that helps them protect the environment is plant biotech crops. Biotech  crops have higher yields than normal crops. They also protect natual habitats and wildlife living within the same area.

the other benefit of  growing biotech crops is protect their crops from weeds. For example, biotechnology introduced the ability for certain crops to tolerate herbicides. In this way, farmers can control weeds without harming  their plants. If farmers grow biotech crops, they do not have to plow the  land to control weeks The benefits for environment include enriching the soil, reducing erosion and contributing to fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Some farmers may have concerns about the safety to use biotechnology because it is a confusing term. It may include genetic modification or genetic engineering. Government stated that all products of plant biotechnology are federally regulated to ensure they are safe for the environment and for livestock animal feed use. Canada has been assessing biotech crops for more than two decades and the results are good for the environment. Keep using biotechnology is good for the environment and human.Better envirnment will give people better lives.

Manage your sugar intake

Nowadays, more and more people diagnosis with diabetes, especially young children. Sugar intake is one of the influence effects. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians intake an average of 110g of sugar per day. To prevent excess sugar intake, there are three ways you can try.

First, pay attention to hidden sources of sugar. Some food looks healthy but it may involve added sugars, for example yogurt and oatmeal. When you buy these kind of food, you can choose to buy plain yogurt. If you really like the sweety taste, you can add a naturally sourced calorie-free sweetener. In this way, you can reduce your sugar intake and have the same flavor food.

Second, beware of beverages. Beverages become popular in people’s lives, especially young children. They taste so good. Statistics Canada reported, beverages account for 35 percent of daily sugar intake for adults. One way to reduce sugar intake is to reduce beverages intake, or you can choose to drink diet beverages such as diet coke. When you choose beverages, make sure you read the food labels before you choose beverages. There is an information about sugar contain on the ingredient label. Also, you need to try to learn different names for sugar, so you can understand sugar’s various form.

Third, do not skip meals. If you skip a meal, your blood sugar level will drop. When blood sugar drops to a point, you body may ask you to intake some food contain sugar. In this situation, you may intake more sugar than normal. If this happens, you can have some fruits to help bring blood sugar level back without intake excess sugar.

There are still many ways to control sugar intake. Try to control your sugar intake from today and live better for you health.

Recovery time: Healing after the residential school abuse (part two)

Contiuning from part one, there are two healing strategies from individuals' and communities' perspective, which can improve Aboriginal people's welfare.

Aboriginal individuals who have suffered trauma in childhood change their perceptions of their lives, often into negative ways, and it could be a long self-healing journey for survivors. The legacy education was a useful way to help Aboriginal people understand residential schools' history and teach them not only the negative, but also the positive aspects of residential schools. For example, one of the Elders who were forced to attend a residential school said that she thought learning English was actually helpful for her life, because she was able find a better job then some non-English speaking Aboriginal people because English is the dominant langue in Canada. Elders were rich resources for individuals' healing process. Elders can provide a  healing circle for individuals who suffered mental trauma from abuse in residential schools. During the healing process, Elders could share their stories and experiences about residential schools. They also establish cultural safety atmosphere for individuals who need help with grief and loss.

Many Aboriginal people live in reservations, and they form Aboriginal communities. There are some programs that can help people relieve stresses from attending residential school. For example, one of the programs, called " letting go", is a healing camp in one of the Aboriginal communities in British Columbia. Some elders who attended this program reported that they were able to sleep with the lights off since leaving residential schools. Moreover, peer support groups in Aboriginal communities are important resources for Aboriginal peopl who are suffering from residential school's abuse.

Now, it is the recovery time for Aboriginal people who were abused at residential schools. Through individual healing strategies and community healing methods, Aboriginal peopl have improved their health conditions day by day, we should keep these efforts to help them live much more healthy lives.

Recovery time: Healing after the residential school abuse (part one)

Today I read an article about the residential school. Since the European colonizers came to Canada, the aboriginal culture has been under tremendous pressure because the colonizers have pushed the white culture to be the dominant one by running residential schools. The purpose of the residential schools was to assimilate the children through the process of education, preaching, as well as cultural degradation by teaching the children to be ashamed of their heritage in order to facilitate the assimilation process.

Aboriginal children were separated from their parents to go to the residential school. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse was rampant in the schools and some of the children died. During this cultural assimilation phase, some Aboriginal people lost their native language and valued skills, such as their traditional way of parenting. Even now, the experiences that Aboriginal people had in residential schools are continuing to have detrimental impact on aboriginal communities. For example, most aboriginal people who attended residential schools developed mental illnesses from being abused at the schools.

The consequences of the culture assimilation are profound, one of which being the most concerning is that the suicide rate among Aboriginal youth are five to seven times higher than that of other young non-Aboriginal Canadians, and the life expectancy of Aboriginal people is five to seven years less. In addition, their self-esteem is generally low due to degrading education. There are many articles talking about the influences of residential schools, but there is in general a lack of knowledge on ways to help the Aboriginal people to overcome the negative effects of residential schools. I will discuss some methods we can use to improve Aboriginal health in part two.

Toronto Zoo opens giant panda exhibition

A four-year-old male and a five-year-old female giant panda can be seen for public at Toronto Zoo on May 18, 2013 morning. The giant pandas arrived in Canada in March from China, and will spend five years at the Toronto Zoo. After that they will be moved to the Calgary Zoo. They will become super stars at Toronto Zoo.

Giant panda is the most precious animals in China. There are less than 1000 giant pandas live all over the world. Most of them live in Si Chuan province. Because of low birth rate and environment pollution, giant pandas face extinction. This two pandas are very precious and have special meanings. They tied China and Canada together and bring in good relationship between two countries. Toronto Zoo prepared home for these guests. When this two pandas came to Canada, they became homesick. They changed their characters. They became shy and did not want to go outside. After a few days, they were familiar with the new environment, and then they became more active than first couple days. Male panda is more open and easy-going than the female one. He likes to play with zoo staffs. Zoo staffs hope that giant panda can produce panda babies at their zoo but the chance is very low. They stated " we have just got to be patient and keep our fingers crossed".

Giant panda is very cute and lovely animal. This time they came to Canada, I hope that Canadian people would like to enjoy the exhibition and this pair of panda can enjoy their lives in this beautiful country.

Retirement relates health issues

Today, I read an article about retirement bad for health. In this article. Writer talked about retirement may increase the developing depression and at least one physical illness such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Even though retirement could increase health condition is a short period, long-term effective is negative.

In China, the retirement age for male is 60, and female is 55. Most of people after retirement, they choose stay at home to look after their grand children. In this lifestyle, it cuts the social networks they formed at work and lead to greater isolation. Which can negatively affect health. One of woman stated " it is boring stay at home and look after children, I lost my life, so I would rather go back to work". Studies showed that compared older peple who were still working with those who were retired. 41 percent more people in retired group suffering depression than still working group. Another positive effect is higer retirement age good for finances. Nowadays, people's life expectancies become longer. If people's retirement age can increase, they can earn more money and then reduces finance stress in their lives. In my opinion, I think that even though people retired, they should have something to do, for example continue work or become volunteers to maintain their social network and fulfill their time.

In the short term, retirees may experience a boost to health, such as reduce work related stress and pressures, but the negative impacts will be show up after a long term.

Google maps is updated

Based on CBC news May 15, 2013, google maps is going to overhaul but new map is currently only available for desktop browsers. Technology is developing very fast recent years. More and more people access to Internet for finding friends, sharing information and reading news.

This is really the big change to google map because the company added on some new features for it. According to the news, the users will be presented with a full screen map and just a single search bar. This feature can let people see the places more clearly. The other feature is the map will be more personalized if the users login google+. For example, people can highlight a restaurant and when you click the restaurant or bar. Google also added on the implementation of public transit routing. It is very good for international students like us who do not have a car. From the new maps, we can find more routes to get the places by taking public transportation.

The only issue I found was one time I searched a place on google map, but it did not give me the right location on the map. Maybe the place changed address and google map did not update facilities' address very often. I hope google map can keep updating the new address for some places that people can get the accurate locations.

Save lives during volcano eruption

According to CBC news, Mexico volcano spewed ash on May 12,2013. Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center recommended that emergency preparation was needed. This news reminded me that on May 7, 2013, Philippines volcano erupted and killed at least five people. It was a sad news. This time Mexico government responded very quickly. The intervention methods for volcano eruption damage include early warning, buliding shelters and disaster education.

Mexico did very well on early warning signs, suchas noticed seismic activity increased at the Popocatepetl volcano and the government warned their citizen that the volcano became active recently. The orther important intervention is preparing shelters before disaster. When disaster came, people need place to live. Enough clean water and food should be prepared in the shelters. The space of the shelters also should be big enough to prevent crowding. The rationale for the big space is to keep ventilation. Volcano eruption relates knowledge is also a key point in prevention. People need to know what they can do and cannot do during diaster. For example, the dangers of volcanic ash and the destructive power of volcanoes. They should have evacuation plans when disaster coming. Preparing is a very important for saving lives. The Mexico government already deloyed soldiers and federal police to the area in the event of a big eruption, and the government closed of an 18-square-kilometre zone around the vocano.

People cannot avoid natural disaster. What we can do is to prepare well for the disaster to reduce damage. I believe that Mexico government will reduce damage as much as possible. They did a good job for early warning.

Mother’s Day

Yesterday was Mother's Day. Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers. Different countries have different days to celebrate it, for example, United Kingdom's Mother's Day is in March, China and Canada have the same date of Mother's Day which is May 12. I called my mother last night to say I missed her.

My mother is a physician who works at Tai An Central Hospital. She is a great person who saved a lot of lives. She is a very nice person because I seldom saw her became angry. I can remember when I was young, she taught me to be a man who has responsibility. She also wants me to try my best to do everything no matter how difficult the tasks are. I am working hard to become a person that she wants me to be. In my opinion, my mother's ideas are always right.

Now, I am in Canada, so I cannot celerate with he in China. I called her last night and said I missed her so much. If I were in China, I would like to send her a gift to express my love. I am looking forward to meeting her in July.

Types of Beer

I went to the Red Robin and had lunch with my friends. Before we started to order food, a waitress asked me what I would like to drink. I wanted some beer but I am not familiar wieh beers' names. She gave me some suggestions and I chose a bottle of Corona. It tasted good. After lunch, I did research about types of beer. There are three basic types of beer- lagers, ales, and specialty beers.

Lagers are crisp and clean beers. They are less alcoholic than ales and they are fermented at a cooler temperature. Main types of lager include pilsner, American lager, Oktoberfest, Bavarian and Bock. Lagers are reported to be the best beer for thirst quenching. Examples are Molson, Canadian and Corona.

Ales are brewed with top fermenting yeast at warmer temperature and they are higher alcohol content than Lagers. Ales are good with heavy meal such as steak and ribs. Main types of ales include English bitters, Pale ale, Porter, and Stout. Examples are Molson Ex and Rickard's Red.

Specialty beers are beers made from anything you can think of, such as chocolate, apples and pumpkin. Main types of specialty beers include spice beer and Weizen. Examples are Muskoka Hefe- Weissier and Grasshopper.

Above all is the basic introduction of types of beer. I would like to try all of them while I study in Canda and try to understand the differences between them. The orther important thing is driking well not drink too much.
