Saudi MERS outbreak

According to CBC news on June 20, Saudi MERS outbreak shows SARS-like symptoms and MERS coronavirus is a high attack rate virus. MERS stands for Middle East respiratory syndrome. Symptoms of MERS infection include renal failure and severe acute pneumonia which often cause death. MERS erupted this spring in four hospitals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, and now it becomes more serious than spring.

MERS has the close symptoms like SARS which outbreak in 2003 and infected more than 8400 people over 31 countries, killing at least 916 people. The other same feature between these two diseases is they are all contagious in hospital and difficult to diagnosis. Scientists said if MERS contagious earlier in the course of illness, it will be hard to treat. MERS is contagious in hospital,so it is a challenge for health professionals. The reason is many patients stay in hospital and they have compromised immune system. Patients will be easy to infect this virus. Doctors and nurses look after many patients everyday, and they have a high risk of getting the disease and transmit to their patients. The best way to control infection is washing hands. Most of the virus will be eliminated by hand hygiene.

Traveling is other way to transmit virus. If people go to Saudi, they need to be caution of their healthy. If they feel uncomfortable, they are better to see the doctor as early as they can. Making sure hand hygiene is also important when people travel. If people get MERS, they may need to be isolated in hospital for treatment.

I believed the World Health Organization will do better this time than SARS outbreak because they have some experiences.

E-cigarettes

According to CBC news on June 18, people concerned about the safety for e-cigarettes. As we all known, smoking is bad for people’s health and can cause lung cancer and heart disease. People tried many ways to quit smoking, one of the methods was using e-cigarettes. As e-cigarettes grow in popularity, some health professionals suggested that e-cigarettes needed to be regulated.

E-cigarettes are battery devices which use a liquid-filled cartridge that contain different flavours such as mint and vanilla. Some e-cigarettes may contain nicotine. This kind of device was not authorized by Health Canada, but some people buy them at online store or flea markets. Health professionals concerned about the safety of the device, the main issues is whether e-cigarettes meet manufacturing and regulatory inspection standards, for example the company should make sure e-cigarettes do not explode and cause burns. If e-cigarettes contain nicotine, they need to be compared with the risk from regular cigarettes.

As I known, some nicotine products can help people quit smoking, such as nicotine patch or gum. Nicotine patch need to be changed every day and it works very well. In my opinion, the best way to stop smoking is people’s motivation. If a person really want to quit smoking, he/she will control himself/herself. If a person does not want to quit smoking, even though what method he/she uses, the results will not be satisfied. We can persuade our family members or friends quitting smoking and we can help them if they need helps.

In conclusion, using scientifically proven methods such as nicotine replacement patches or gums instead of e-cigarettes is good and safe for people’s health.

Chinese culture influences cancer patients (part 2)

The Chinese healing focuses on Ying and Yang, which seek balance and harmony within the body. It’s in complete accordance with the term “homeostasis” in modern western medicine which describes the balance of all physiological processes. The Chinese people believe that many diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders are related to the loss of balance between Ying and Yang which compromises the bodily functions. This is also reflected in some theories in the western medicine, such as decreased immune surveillance gives neoplastic cells the opportunities to become cancerous. In this sense, there is very little difference between the view of cancer in Chinese culture and that in the modern western medicine. However, when it comes to cancer care, these two systems do not always share the same approaches.

In the hospitals of North America, doctors typically communicate directly with the patients about his or her conditions and provide detailed information on the benefits and risks of different treatment regimens. The patient usually has a complete grasp of the situation and is one of the main decision makers during the treatment process. However, in Chinese culture, doctors, nurses, and family member tend to keep the patient “out of the loop” by hiding much information, especially the grave news, from him/her. Even if it is decided that the patient should be informed of real situation, the communication is typically done between the family members and the patient, but not directly from the doctor .

Interestingly, despite being a taboo topic in Chinese culture, the diagnosis of cancer is usually received well the by patients themselves, and hysteria or deep depression is rarely observed. This also stems from the ancient Chinese culture. For example, Confucianism views death as a preservation of virtue and Buddhism believes in reincarnation, where a new life will occur after death . From the evolution point of view, death is part of the life circle, and it is a necessary process to ensure the variety of the genetics which allow us to adapt to the ever changing environment without overwhelming the earth with exploding population. Cancer is just one of the natural processes to enforce the life circle and is of little fundament difference from other forms of death.

Chinese culture influences cancer patients (part 1)

Decades into modern medical cares, with incredible improvement in medicines, diagnostic methods, and medical devices, the average life-expectancy in developed countries has dramatically extended. Many lethal diseases, especially infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis, and pneumonia can now be easily treated or prevented and are no long regarded as major threats to public health. Moreover, the research of human genetics and molecular and cellular biology has not only helped us to understand in much depth the driving force of life, aging, illness, and death, but also led to the discovery of innumerable diagnostic tests and medicines. However, just as exciting as it was when the human genome was decoded, we also desperately realized that aging and death are the inevitable course of life. Immortality only exists in the distant future, if not just in fictions.

Death can come in many forms, but nothing is as dreadful as cancer, a rather complex disease related to aging and mutation of one’s own body. A cancer can quietly lurker for many years or even decades before becoming life threatening, but it can also come so robustly and roaring and claim a life within a few weeks. Regardless of the origin or form of cancer, it is a term equal to death sentence to most people.

As one of the countries with the longest history of medicine and medical care, China has developed a broad and profound culture related to disease and decease. There are a multitude of pluralistic religions in the Chinese culture, such as Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, each having its own views of life and death. Deeply influenced by these religions and beliefs, the Chinese have developed distinct thinking patterns, world views, and lifestyle than those of the western culture . Many Chinese people even believe in the traditional Chinese medicines more than western medicines when it comes to treatment of complex diseases such as cancer.

Eating habit relates children’s health

On Jun 17, CBC released a piece of news which tile was pay attention to how children eat, not just what. As we all known, nutrition is crucial for children’s health,so parents are focus on food choices for their children. According to the new study, children’s health is not only relate to what they eat, but also how they eat.

This new research stated that eating behaviours of preschoolers, such as watching TV while having dinner can lead to elevated cholesterol levels that could put kids at risk for cardiovascular disease in future life. Children aged from three to five who with poor eating behaviours had higher blood-cholesterol readings than children who had healthier eating hehaviours. If parents teach their children healthy eating habits, child will be healthier in later life. Some bad eating habits include eating while watching TV, eating in front of computers, and snacking on fluids like juice that can make kids feeling full at mealtime.

To solve this problem, parents can try to make mealtimes fun. For example, only present healthy food to children and exhibit good dietary habits like taking lots of vegetables. In this way, parents can promote healthy eating in children. Creative presentation of food can improve children’s eating habits, such as cutting vegetables into interesting shapes.

Targeting preschool children is very important because this group is usually neglected. Studies showed that in older children, elevated cholesterol levels are associated both with the later risk of heart attacks and strokes. If we try to intervene and promote healthy eating behaviours in preschool children group, their health will be promoted later on.

Pay attention to sibling fights

CBC news posted a news which is sibling fights compared to school sibling on June 17. After reading this piece of news, I wanted to share some of my thoughts. I agreed with the writer’s opinion because sibling fights might be associated with psychological damage.

Pediatrics did a research in the U.S. about sibling fights between aged one month to seventeen years. The result revealed that about thirty-two percent of children and teens said that they had experienced sibling fights in the past years. Caregivers of kids gave three types of sibling aggression which is physical assault, property victimization and psychological aggression. Physical assault is children hitting or kicking by his/her siblings without weapon or injure. Property victimization means that children’s belongings are stolen or broken by siblings. Psychological aggression includes saying things to make siblings feel bad, scared or not wanted around.

I had experience about psychological aggression cause by my cousin. I still can remember that he said I were silly and he did not want to play game with me. During a period of time, I felt so bad and I were isolated by my cousin. When I grew up, I tried to forgive him and my parents said my cousin was young at that time, so his words should not be correct. Actually, this memory is still in my head and it is hard to deal with the feelings. Parents should try their best to prevent siblings fight because the small fights may cause psychological damage and it may become school bully in future.

All in all, parents and caregivers cannot dismiss aggression between siblings as normal or harmless, because the children’s mental health can be effect in a negative way. Finding sibling aggression in early phase and prevent it is good for children’s mental development and their future lives.

Poverty as illness

According to CBC health news, doctors said poverty was an illness and needed to be treated. The Canadian Medical Association made a survey about how poverty affects people’s health. The survey’s result showed that social and economic factors determine fifty percent of health outcomes.

One of the reasons that poverty affects health is the doctors have difficulty when they prescribe medication for the poor. One of the doctor who works at Toronto’s St. Michael’s hospital stated that treating people at low income and a higher income will be different. Some drugs which he can prescribe for the rich but not the poor. For example, if the expensive medication will work better for the disease and people should buy it themselves, the rich people can ask doctor to prescribe it and get treatment, but the poor will ask doctor to prescribe a cheaper one instead of the expensive one. Obviously, the treatment’s outcome will be different.

The other reasons that poverty affects health is people’s lifestyle and their stress level. People who have low income may have worse lifestyle than the rich, for example smoking and drinking. Poor people say smoking is one of the strategies to relieve stress. The rich people may do exercise for relieving stress. The poor may have high calorie food such as fires, burger and can food, but the rich have healthier food such as fresh fruit and vegetable. Lifestyle influences the health status. People belong to low income group may easier develop diabetes and heart disease than the rich. The influences will be continue to affect the children and the children may become unhealth. It is kind of negative effects for many generation.

In conclusion, people should see poverty as illness. If we can improve people’s living conditions, it will be good for them and their next generation.

Vegetarianism and health

Today, I read an article which is talking about vegetarianism and their health status. According the article, vegetarianism’s health are better than meat lovers, such as lower death rate, lower heart disease rate and obesity rate.

In the article, people were divided into five groups which were nonvegetarian( diet that includes poultry and red meat), semi-vegetarian ( poultry and red meat, but no more than once a week), pesco-vegetarian ( no poultry and red meat, but include seafood), lacto-ovo-vegetarian (no poultry, red meat or seafood, but include dairy products and eggs), and vegan ( no animal products at all). One of the reasons this article attracted me is this is my first time to know there are different standards to divide people’s diet. The article’s results showed that a vegetarian diet was associated with a twelve percent lower risk of death. Among lacto-ovo-vegetarians, the reduced risk of death was nine percent, which was just slightly better than that of the semi-vegetarians (eight percent). Vegetarian group has better confounding factors, such as body mass index, exercise habits and calorie intake.

An interesting finding in this article was the vegetarianism has healthier heart than meat lovers. Those in vegetarian group were nineteen percent less likely than their meat-eating groups to die from heart disease. In addition, the article revealed that men were much more likely than women to benefit from being vegetarianism. Men decreased death rate much lower than women in the vegetarian group.

In my opinion, no matter which groups people live with, the most important thing is balancing nutrition and calorie intake. Doing exercise and living in a healthy way is crucial for people’s health.

Liver cancer raised in Canada

Based on CBC health news, liver cancer incidence has tripled in Canadian men and doubled in women since the 1970s. The Canadian Cancer Society estimated that 187600 people in Canada will know that they have a new cancer in 2013 and about 75500 Canadians will die from cancer.

Liver Cancer was called one of the fastest rising types of cancer and it is poor prognosis. The most greatest risk factors for liver cancer is chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Liver disease is not well-recognized because it does not develop symptoms. Patients are hard aware that they have liver cancer until untreatable stage. According above reasons, people should exam their liver function every year. If people have hepatitis B or hepatitis C, they should treat the disease as soon as possible. The other way to prevent hepatitis B is getting a vaccine. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C.

To protect your liver, there are some risk factors which we can avoid in our daily life, such as excessive alcohol use, overweight and smoking. Heavy alcohol can destroy liver cells and also decrease liver function. From a study, a drinker’s liver is larger than people who do not drink. The other risk factor is diabetes. Especially, some new immigrants. Because of the food style’s change, some people develop diabetes from intake more sugar and calorie. Keeping healthy life style is important to prevent liver disease.

In conclusion, nowadays, liver cancer’s incidence rate is increasing. People need to improve their awareness of preventing liver disease. Making sure do body check every year and living in a healthy life style is crucial for your health.

Walk the dog, good for your heart

Today, I read a CBC news about pet owners may acquire health benefits such as lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels from walking a dog. I agreed with this point because when you walk a dog, you also do some physical activities at the same time. Many medical studies conformed that pet owners have a reduced risk of heart disease.

Some people who walk at least 10000 steps a day tend to live longer and feel better. In my opinion, it is easier to a dog owner because dogs always want people to play and walk with them, when the dog owners walk with dog, they may feel happy and relax, the good mood is helpful to reduce stress. They also do activities when they walk a dog, such as walking or chasing. It is very hard to go to gym after a long day’s work. Even though cardiologists suggested we do exercises every week, it is difficult when we feel tired. But the situation is different when you have a dog. When the dog owners really have to walk the dog, it becomes part of their daily activity.

In the news, it also reveled that petting a dog may lower blood pressure. One of the studies from the University of South Carolina showed that pet a dog compared with talking to the animal can reduce blood pressure. It means that touch is an important component of the pet effect. The reason may include that when you pet a dog, your mind is took away in terms of thinking about your work all the time or other things that stress you out.

In conclusion, the heart association claimed that owing pets may be associated with lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and a lower incidence of obesity.

No Tobacco Day

Today, May 31 is No Tobacco Day which declared by the World Health Organization(WHO). This year’s topic is a ban on tobacco advertisement and promotion. Stop smoking can prevent diseases which cause death, such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

According to CBC news’s data, the top three areas where have the most smokers are Nunavut 59.7 per cent, N.W.T. 34.9 per cent and Yukon 29.3 per cent. BC is 15.8% which is the lowest smoking rate in Canada. From the data, North Canada’s numbers are significantly high. The other information from the news is 80 per cent smokers come from low or middle income families. I think the reason is the poor copying strategies. Some people smoking to release stress. Actually, it does not help and bad for the health.

As we all known, smoking harm out health. Studies showed that 21 per cent of deaths in men and 12.2 per cent of deaths in women because of smoking. The most three consequences relate to smoking are lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. If we can smoke less, the less chances we got disease. Second hand smoking is the other killer. Even though you do not smoke, you may expose to the smoking environment. It is bad for your health even worse than smoking directly.

It is very important to control tobacco use. There are some ways about tobacco control, such as ban all tobacco adverting, promotion and sponsorship or increasing tobacco prices. In my opinion, the best way to let people quit smoking is education. If people get more education about the negative of smoking, they may think about to quit smoking.

Nodding Disease

Today, I read an article about nodding disease because I was attracted by the article’s title. After reading this article, I felt so sad for the children who have this tropical disease. Nodding disease is a mentally and physically disabling disease that affects children, typically between the ages of 5 and 15. The most infected country is southern Sudan.

Nodding disease is characterized by episodes of repetitive nodding of the head, with progression to generalized tonicclonic seizures, mental deterioration and physical incapacity. During seizures the children lose consciousness and they may hurt themselves, for example fall into fire or drown in rivers. Unfortunately, there is no treatment yet. WHO suggested that some low-income countries need to improve their water sanitation, because some parasites live in the contaminated water. It is difficult to improve water quality because low income countries have no money.

I thought some points related to nodding disease. First, income and social status influence treating nodding disease. In low income countries, people are poor, so they cannot afford medication to treat symptoms. Also, children are malnutrition which causes they have difficulties recover from the disease. Second, health services influence diseases’ cure. Limited health services in low income countries and people are difficult to access health services, for example, people who live at rural area, the transportation issues and locations should be considered. Third, personal behaviour and coping skills are also influence disease progress. Nodding disease begins when children are fed the local diet of beans. Western food do not affect the disease.

In conclusion, local health workers should be trained in the identification of the syndrome and how to support patients psychologically and socially. The government should be focus on preventing deterioration of the cases and strengthening surveillance.

Adolescents with diabetes need psychologic supports

Few days ago, I posted a blog related to sugar intake. Nowadays, pop drinks become popular beverage among adolescents. The other problem arises which is more and more adolescents get diabetes. Adolescence is a unique age group because they are in a physical and psychological development phase and face the transition into adulthood. While most people focus on the effect of diabetes on adolescents’ physical transition, it is more and more recognized that psychological factors play important roles in disease
management for diabetic adolescents.

One of the most significant psychological changes of adolescents with diabetes is knowing that they have diabetes and have to live with it for their entire lives. Denial and anger are the first psychosocial stage when adolescents first know that they have diabetes. They may ask parents and doctors why they have diabetes. Some of the diabetic adolescents refuse to take medications and do not follow doctor’s instructions.Because of poor glycemic control, they may experience fatigue and may not want to go to school or attend daily activities. Young people with diabetes are at increased risk for information processing weaknesses and learning problems, especially with early diabetes onset. Gaining knowledge is an important task for adolescents. If they cannot control their glycemic level, they will be facing difficulties in studying. In addition, they may feel depressed and think they are different from others.

When diabetic adolescents finally accept the fact of having diabetes, some of them may experience depression, frustration, and fear. They fear the diabetic complications such as blindness, kidney failure and non-traumatic lower limb amputations. Some of them think it is the end of the world and think they will die soon. Living in fear makes them depressed and anxious. These negative feelings also affect glycemic control. We can help them through this difficult period by consultation and give them emotional support.

H7N9 virus and drug resistance

In April, H7N9 flu attacked Shang hai in China, almost 30 people died from the disease. According to CBC news on May 28, new issue is coming which is new H7N9 bird flu virus easily develops drug resistance. Studies showed that H7N9 virus already resistant a class of flu medication. It is dangerous because if flu become worse in future, there will be no drug can prevent of treat the disease. More people will be infected by H7N9 without vaccine.

There are one of the reasons that people can develop drug resistance which is misuse drugs. For example, antibiotic drugs is one of the most severe misused drugs. Some people have acquired the habit of self-medication. However, because of their lack of knowledge, they often misuse antibiotics, such as failure to complete therapy, skipping of doses, and reusing expired antibiotics. Research showed that patients frequently discontinue taking antibiotic therapy when they begin to feel better or slight side effects, and one-quarter of the patients retain leftover antibiotics for future use. This situation is very common. Sometimes, I discontinued drug therapy when I felt better. In my opinion, I think that I recover from the disease, so I do not need to take the drug anymore. Actually, it is wrong. If next the symptoms occur, I have to repeat the drug therapy, but sometimes the same drugs did not work in the new cases. I need to find more strong doses or drugs to relieve my symptoms.

The best way to control the flu is not treat the disease but to prevent it. H7N9 transmits between people, so we should improve personal hygiene to prevent transmission. For example, wash you hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. From daily life, we can prevent flu by cutting off the infection cycle.

Terror attack in British

CBC news reported on May 24, a plane which flight from Pakistan to Britain was diverted from its original course. the reason was that two men on that plane planed to attack the flight which could threaten 300 people's lives. one of the passengers stated " two men who had tried to move toward the cockpit during the flight were handcuffed and arrested once the plane landed."

British security department suspected this plane terrorist threat may have relate to British soldier was attacked issue. Few days ago, a British soldier was brutally killed on a London street in a terror attack. this terror attack may relate to the British government and troops in foreign lands. The attackers wanted improve the public attention on religion issues. This young British soldier who was killed in a brutal day time only 25 years old. His wife and family members were very sad. No one believed terror attack had happened in British.

British government should increase security level because these terror attack's methods were easy to copy. Two men only used butcher's knives to kill the soldier in daytime . Moreover, the airplane terrorist threat the other example of life threaten issue. the British government should figure out some ways to prevent similar attacks happen again. One of  the methods may be build a better relationships with Muslim countries. I hope that no one will be hurt during this stress period. We have to save lives and do not hurt people.

Environment Week

From June 2 to 8 is Environment week in Canada, farmers are doing great jobs for protecting environment. One way that helps them protect the environment is plant biotech crops. Biotech  crops have higher yields than normal crops. They also protect natual habitats and wildlife living within the same area.

the other benefit of  growing biotech crops is protect their crops from weeds. For example, biotechnology introduced the ability for certain crops to tolerate herbicides. In this way, farmers can control weeds without harming  their plants. If farmers grow biotech crops, they do not have to plow the  land to control weeks The benefits for environment include enriching the soil, reducing erosion and contributing to fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Some farmers may have concerns about the safety to use biotechnology because it is a confusing term. It may include genetic modification or genetic engineering. Government stated that all products of plant biotechnology are federally regulated to ensure they are safe for the environment and for livestock animal feed use. Canada has been assessing biotech crops for more than two decades and the results are good for the environment. Keep using biotechnology is good for the environment and human.Better envirnment will give people better lives.

Manage your sugar intake

Nowadays, more and more people diagnosis with diabetes, especially young children. Sugar intake is one of the influence effects. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians intake an average of 110g of sugar per day. To prevent excess sugar intake, there are three ways you can try.

First, pay attention to hidden sources of sugar. Some food looks healthy but it may involve added sugars, for example yogurt and oatmeal. When you buy these kind of food, you can choose to buy plain yogurt. If you really like the sweety taste, you can add a naturally sourced calorie-free sweetener. In this way, you can reduce your sugar intake and have the same flavor food.

Second, beware of beverages. Beverages become popular in people’s lives, especially young children. They taste so good. Statistics Canada reported, beverages account for 35 percent of daily sugar intake for adults. One way to reduce sugar intake is to reduce beverages intake, or you can choose to drink diet beverages such as diet coke. When you choose beverages, make sure you read the food labels before you choose beverages. There is an information about sugar contain on the ingredient label. Also, you need to try to learn different names for sugar, so you can understand sugar’s various form.

Third, do not skip meals. If you skip a meal, your blood sugar level will drop. When blood sugar drops to a point, you body may ask you to intake some food contain sugar. In this situation, you may intake more sugar than normal. If this happens, you can have some fruits to help bring blood sugar level back without intake excess sugar.

There are still many ways to control sugar intake. Try to control your sugar intake from today and live better for you health.

Recovery time: Healing after the residential school abuse (part two)

Contiuning from part one, there are two healing strategies from individuals' and communities' perspective, which can improve Aboriginal people's welfare.

Aboriginal individuals who have suffered trauma in childhood change their perceptions of their lives, often into negative ways, and it could be a long self-healing journey for survivors. The legacy education was a useful way to help Aboriginal people understand residential schools' history and teach them not only the negative, but also the positive aspects of residential schools. For example, one of the Elders who were forced to attend a residential school said that she thought learning English was actually helpful for her life, because she was able find a better job then some non-English speaking Aboriginal people because English is the dominant langue in Canada. Elders were rich resources for individuals' healing process. Elders can provide a  healing circle for individuals who suffered mental trauma from abuse in residential schools. During the healing process, Elders could share their stories and experiences about residential schools. They also establish cultural safety atmosphere for individuals who need help with grief and loss.

Many Aboriginal people live in reservations, and they form Aboriginal communities. There are some programs that can help people relieve stresses from attending residential school. For example, one of the programs, called " letting go", is a healing camp in one of the Aboriginal communities in British Columbia. Some elders who attended this program reported that they were able to sleep with the lights off since leaving residential schools. Moreover, peer support groups in Aboriginal communities are important resources for Aboriginal peopl who are suffering from residential school's abuse.

Now, it is the recovery time for Aboriginal people who were abused at residential schools. Through individual healing strategies and community healing methods, Aboriginal peopl have improved their health conditions day by day, we should keep these efforts to help them live much more healthy lives.

Recovery time: Healing after the residential school abuse (part one)

Today I read an article about the residential school. Since the European colonizers came to Canada, the aboriginal culture has been under tremendous pressure because the colonizers have pushed the white culture to be the dominant one by running residential schools. The purpose of the residential schools was to assimilate the children through the process of education, preaching, as well as cultural degradation by teaching the children to be ashamed of their heritage in order to facilitate the assimilation process.

Aboriginal children were separated from their parents to go to the residential school. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse was rampant in the schools and some of the children died. During this cultural assimilation phase, some Aboriginal people lost their native language and valued skills, such as their traditional way of parenting. Even now, the experiences that Aboriginal people had in residential schools are continuing to have detrimental impact on aboriginal communities. For example, most aboriginal people who attended residential schools developed mental illnesses from being abused at the schools.

The consequences of the culture assimilation are profound, one of which being the most concerning is that the suicide rate among Aboriginal youth are five to seven times higher than that of other young non-Aboriginal Canadians, and the life expectancy of Aboriginal people is five to seven years less. In addition, their self-esteem is generally low due to degrading education. There are many articles talking about the influences of residential schools, but there is in general a lack of knowledge on ways to help the Aboriginal people to overcome the negative effects of residential schools. I will discuss some methods we can use to improve Aboriginal health in part two.

Toronto Zoo opens giant panda exhibition

A four-year-old male and a five-year-old female giant panda can be seen for public at Toronto Zoo on May 18, 2013 morning. The giant pandas arrived in Canada in March from China, and will spend five years at the Toronto Zoo. After that they will be moved to the Calgary Zoo. They will become super stars at Toronto Zoo.

Giant panda is the most precious animals in China. There are less than 1000 giant pandas live all over the world. Most of them live in Si Chuan province. Because of low birth rate and environment pollution, giant pandas face extinction. This two pandas are very precious and have special meanings. They tied China and Canada together and bring in good relationship between two countries. Toronto Zoo prepared home for these guests. When this two pandas came to Canada, they became homesick. They changed their characters. They became shy and did not want to go outside. After a few days, they were familiar with the new environment, and then they became more active than first couple days. Male panda is more open and easy-going than the female one. He likes to play with zoo staffs. Zoo staffs hope that giant panda can produce panda babies at their zoo but the chance is very low. They stated " we have just got to be patient and keep our fingers crossed".

Giant panda is very cute and lovely animal. This time they came to Canada, I hope that Canadian people would like to enjoy the exhibition and this pair of panda can enjoy their lives in this beautiful country.

Retirement relates health issues

Today, I read an article about retirement bad for health. In this article. Writer talked about retirement may increase the developing depression and at least one physical illness such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Even though retirement could increase health condition is a short period, long-term effective is negative.

In China, the retirement age for male is 60, and female is 55. Most of people after retirement, they choose stay at home to look after their grand children. In this lifestyle, it cuts the social networks they formed at work and lead to greater isolation. Which can negatively affect health. One of woman stated " it is boring stay at home and look after children, I lost my life, so I would rather go back to work". Studies showed that compared older peple who were still working with those who were retired. 41 percent more people in retired group suffering depression than still working group. Another positive effect is higer retirement age good for finances. Nowadays, people's life expectancies become longer. If people's retirement age can increase, they can earn more money and then reduces finance stress in their lives. In my opinion, I think that even though people retired, they should have something to do, for example continue work or become volunteers to maintain their social network and fulfill their time.

In the short term, retirees may experience a boost to health, such as reduce work related stress and pressures, but the negative impacts will be show up after a long term.

Google maps is updated

Based on CBC news May 15, 2013, google maps is going to overhaul but new map is currently only available for desktop browsers. Technology is developing very fast recent years. More and more people access to Internet for finding friends, sharing information and reading news.

This is really the big change to google map because the company added on some new features for it. According to the news, the users will be presented with a full screen map and just a single search bar. This feature can let people see the places more clearly. The other feature is the map will be more personalized if the users login google+. For example, people can highlight a restaurant and when you click the restaurant or bar. Google also added on the implementation of public transit routing. It is very good for international students like us who do not have a car. From the new maps, we can find more routes to get the places by taking public transportation.

The only issue I found was one time I searched a place on google map, but it did not give me the right location on the map. Maybe the place changed address and google map did not update facilities' address very often. I hope google map can keep updating the new address for some places that people can get the accurate locations.

Save lives during volcano eruption

According to CBC news, Mexico volcano spewed ash on May 12,2013. Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center recommended that emergency preparation was needed. This news reminded me that on May 7, 2013, Philippines volcano erupted and killed at least five people. It was a sad news. This time Mexico government responded very quickly. The intervention methods for volcano eruption damage include early warning, buliding shelters and disaster education.

Mexico did very well on early warning signs, suchas noticed seismic activity increased at the Popocatepetl volcano and the government warned their citizen that the volcano became active recently. The orther important intervention is preparing shelters before disaster. When disaster came, people need place to live. Enough clean water and food should be prepared in the shelters. The space of the shelters also should be big enough to prevent crowding. The rationale for the big space is to keep ventilation. Volcano eruption relates knowledge is also a key point in prevention. People need to know what they can do and cannot do during diaster. For example, the dangers of volcanic ash and the destructive power of volcanoes. They should have evacuation plans when disaster coming. Preparing is a very important for saving lives. The Mexico government already deloyed soldiers and federal police to the area in the event of a big eruption, and the government closed of an 18-square-kilometre zone around the vocano.

People cannot avoid natural disaster. What we can do is to prepare well for the disaster to reduce damage. I believe that Mexico government will reduce damage as much as possible. They did a good job for early warning.

Mother’s Day

Yesterday was Mother's Day. Mother's Day is a celebration honoring mothers. Different countries have different days to celebrate it, for example, United Kingdom's Mother's Day is in March, China and Canada have the same date of Mother's Day which is May 12. I called my mother last night to say I missed her.

My mother is a physician who works at Tai An Central Hospital. She is a great person who saved a lot of lives. She is a very nice person because I seldom saw her became angry. I can remember when I was young, she taught me to be a man who has responsibility. She also wants me to try my best to do everything no matter how difficult the tasks are. I am working hard to become a person that she wants me to be. In my opinion, my mother's ideas are always right.

Now, I am in Canada, so I cannot celerate with he in China. I called her last night and said I missed her so much. If I were in China, I would like to send her a gift to express my love. I am looking forward to meeting her in July.

Types of Beer

I went to the Red Robin and had lunch with my friends. Before we started to order food, a waitress asked me what I would like to drink. I wanted some beer but I am not familiar wieh beers' names. She gave me some suggestions and I chose a bottle of Corona. It tasted good. After lunch, I did research about types of beer. There are three basic types of beer- lagers, ales, and specialty beers.

Lagers are crisp and clean beers. They are less alcoholic than ales and they are fermented at a cooler temperature. Main types of lager include pilsner, American lager, Oktoberfest, Bavarian and Bock. Lagers are reported to be the best beer for thirst quenching. Examples are Molson, Canadian and Corona.

Ales are brewed with top fermenting yeast at warmer temperature and they are higher alcohol content than Lagers. Ales are good with heavy meal such as steak and ribs. Main types of ales include English bitters, Pale ale, Porter, and Stout. Examples are Molson Ex and Rickard's Red.

Specialty beers are beers made from anything you can think of, such as chocolate, apples and pumpkin. Main types of specialty beers include spice beer and Weizen. Examples are Muskoka Hefe- Weissier and Grasshopper.

Above all is the basic introduction of types of beer. I would like to try all of them while I study in Canda and try to understand the differences between them. The orther important thing is driking well not drink too much.
